The Story Of the Peppered Paul

The Peppered Paul was founded through personal and professional involvement in the pet industry. Seeing the blockages caused by dog bed stuffing in vets and shelters and the substantial waste being generated within the industry, inspired us to search for a solution that would be sustainable and protect our pets. Here at the Peppered Paul, we have created a dog bed that you will never have to throw away. A durable waterproof design and cyclical life cycle protects your pup, finances, and the environment, keeping landfills clear and your pup safe and happy.

16.29 million tons of waste from pet beds and toys

This includes textile, rubber, and leather pet-waste in landfills recorded in 2023.

The Peppered Paul up-cycles scrap neoprene and rubber, keeping them out of landfills and putting their 80+ year usable life to good use.

Prohibitively High Prices For Sustainable Products

Sustainable products are 75-85% more expensive than their counterparts, leaving people who want to make environmentally conscious choices with recycled or biodegradable dog beds paying more or being priced out.

The Peppered Paul dog beds retail for $80-$180, and include lifetime repairs and recycling at end of life. Upon damage or destruction, we will repair your existing bed or ship you a new one. All to ensure that this will be your last dog bed, saving you time and money and saving the planet waste and valuable resources.

Lack of Quality leading to fast turn over of beds

Dog beds range in price from $30- $300. Each home, with at least one dog, goes through an estimated 3-17 dog beds per year causing undue financial strain on pet parents and creating hazards for dogs.

Using recycled materials is only part of the solution. The Peppered Paul’s beds are fully waterproof and designed to take abuse from dogs including, but not limited to: chewing, pee, poop, vomit, claws, and weather based hazards like rain and snow.

A Sneak Peak Into The Design

The Peppered Paul Lounger

The Overview

The Peppered Paul Lounger Bed has three primary elements and four layers making it 100% waterproof and incredibly durable even for the most aggressive chewers. Over 148+ interviews with experts and extensive user testing was conducted, analyzed and iterated to create the perfect design for your pup. All materials selected went through a rigorous durability test with substantial time exposed to the sun, rain, pee, poop, vomit and mud. Each iteration of the bed went through multiple trials with rigorously chewing pups (dogs that go through over 15 dog beds per year due to destruction). Durability achieved through selecting the right recycled materials and intentional design is our focus allowing us to create a bed that truly lasts and stays out of landfills.

The Three Main Sections of the Bed

  • The stuffing is recycled memory foam shredded and enclosed by a rubber seamless air tight casing. Shredded memory foam was selected to allow the dog to move the density of padding through digging on the top layer of the bed. Burrowing is a natural behavior for dogs and allows them to both increase comfort and regulate body temperature. Thereby, we wanted to make sure that your pup could make their little bed as comfortable as possible without destroying it.

  • Encasing the memory foam is a water tight recycled rubber sealed casing. The rubber casing acts as both additional water, chew and substance protection for the stuffing. When aiming for the highest level of durability, layers are everything. Think of the rubber casing as an insurance policy keeping the core of the bed safe and dry.

  • The 100% waterproof bed cover is made out of closed cell recycled neoprene and has three layers: neoprene fabric, recycled rubber interior and another layer of neoprene fabric. The casing has waterproof seams held together by a cyanoacrylate. Have seams been a problem area in the past? Well, we have tested the strength of the seams up against the most proficient chewers and pull tear tests and they have been unbreakable. All covers are removable in case of damage and can be shipped separately back to The Peppered Paul for any needed maintenance (not that we think you will need any). This also makes it easier to travel with your bed or remove for more detailed cleaning after a muddy walk.

100% Waterproof and Easy To clean

Cleaning stains off the Peppered Paul Lounger is as easy as spraying the stain with a mix of soap and water and scrubbing gently. Fur and dirt suck right off with any normal vacuum or a good shaking outside (just like a rug). The dog bed covers are made from neoprene so you can’t heat dry them, but you can tumble on cold in the washer if there’s a need.
